Glow Sticks and Coloring Books and Toy Cars, Oh My!

I think D has the idea that a broken leg may be just about as good as his birthday. He's received an influx of cards, packages, visitors, treats and gifts from so many generous and thoughtful friends and relatives, even some we have never met.

We are now at the 1/2 way point in his cast, 3 weeks down, 3 weeks to go. The pain is clearly gone, the hesitancy to move around for fear of hurting is gone, and now it's just dealing with the boredom of being stuck inside with (only slightly) limited mobility. It's been hot & humid here on the Big River, and so we've hesitated taking D out to avoid getting sweaty and thus itchy in his cast. We've had a few evening walks in the wagon, a short trip with DaddyHealy to watch some hay baling in our neighborhood, and a few early mornings outside blowing bubbles of drawing with sidewalk chalk, but otherwise we are housebound. Talk about stir crazy!

As dear friends and family have scattered packages and surprises and mail throughout these 3 weeks, we have had wonderful opportunities to discuss some really important concepts, even for a 4 year old.....generosity, gratitude, sharing to name a few. And while I thank God and our friends for making these 3 weeks so much easier with all the support, I am also eternally grateful for the lessons that seem to be sinking in.

When we counted his piggy bank proceeds last evening (to deposit into the bank, as it was overflowing) we had a little chat about tithing for the Church and he set aside money for weekly collections. When I poured the remaining sum into a ziptop bag to take to the bank, he suggested we had better save some out incase someone else breaks their leg and we need to buy them something to cheer them up. It melted my heart. Made me want to put an extra $20 bill in his bag just for the selfless generosity a 4-year-old can display. I have to admit I had a few "why us, why him, why now" moments when he first broke his leg, but the rewards have been immeasurable. (though complete unpacking and settling in to our new place is unfortunately NOT on that list)

Anyway, here are a few of the fun & unique ways our loved ones have helped pass the dog days....

Whoever invented those ridiculously overpriced musical cards must have known we'd have days like this! D has become a masterful sitting dancer.

Puzzles! Of course! What else could be accomplished sitting is pretty much one position? Especially good the earliest weeks when he was afraid to move...

Now here was a grand idea from our cousin. 7-year-olds know all kinds of things, like how when you have a broken leg, you probably can't reach all the stuff you dropped. (and mommas with big bellies don't feel like bending over to pick them up either!) S picked out this "robot claw" for D, which when it's being used for anything besides grabbing a sibling, has been a perfectly fun and practical gift!
This has to be one of my favorites because it is oh, so appropriate. The king's crown atop his head is so telling. He has been receiving royal treatment indeed. And right behind, little M mimicking everything he does... the story of our days!
These sunglasses are just too groovy to resist. Friends from the Prairie sent these and a pair for M too. They've gotten a lot of mileage. D plans to wear them to his next orthopedic appointment to see if the doctor will recognize him.

Who would have thought, but this little gem was a favorite. It is a glow stick....a 12 hour lifespan but 12 hours of bliss. He even slept with it, and we had a hearty talk about how it would not be still glowing when he woke. Regardless, the next morning I was expecting disappointment and even perhaps a 4 year old fit. Instead when he woke he said "But it's still yellow!" :)
